BOTULINUM TYPE A

Botulinum type A sometimes referred to as Botox® (Allergan Inc) or Dysport® (Ipsen Ltd) is excellent at removing wrinkles, frown lines and crow's feet, giving a more youthful appearance. Wrinkles are the result of small folds in the skin due to over- activity of the underlying muscles of the face. Its full name is Botulinum toxin type A and is produced by the anaerobe Clostridium botulinum. The toxin works by blocking the neuromuscular junction and causing temporary muscle paralysis. This reduction in muscle function and tone causes the wrinkles in the overlying skin to disappear.

The optimal areas for Botulinum type A treatment are the lines on the forehead, the glabellar or frown lines at the junction of the top of the nose and lower forehead, and the wrinkles at the side of the eyes, better known as crow's feet. Botulinum type A is administered with a very small needle just under the skin., and effects start from approximately 48 hours after injection and last for between four and six months. After injection patients must stay upright and avoid rubbing the treated areas for four hours. Repeated tensing of the muscle groups during the first four hours improves the effectiveness of the Botulinum type A. It is a very safe and simple cosmetic procedure.
